Nocturne Under the Bridge, Night survey site photos (2026)
During the Summer months, when dusk falls beneath the Maine Bridge in Castlemaine, a piece of theatre unfolds. The Daubenton’s bat holds the role of bold protagonist. A small bat closely associated with rivers and waterways, they skim above the surface of the water, hunting caddisflies, mayflies and midges. This work draws on my experience of the Dabenton’s Bat Waterway Survey by Bat Conservation Ireland.
Night survey, inkjet print on homemade paper, 2026
Photographs taken at the survey sites; which were illuminated only by headtorch light, are printed onto handmade paper. Walking through these sites in the complete darkness, and stopping in these designated spots, I felt the headtorches operated like spotlights, creating vignettes. We were setting the stage for each Act every time.
